Stephen O’Malley - Director
We love a problem, that’s what engineers thrive on. We are hard wired to solve problems. It is unusual when the easy answer and the best answer are the same. Interrogating the brief, drawing out the project drivers and spending time understanding the fundamentals are essential to get to the best answers. This part of the process can be the most challenging, but this is where real value can be found.
Once the targets are set there are lots of people who need to be convinced on how to get there. Many are rightfully cautious but open to persuasion, comforted by a well researched, well reasoned and carefully justified argument. Others don’t want to change because that’s not the way they have done it before or lack the appetite for a proper, meaningful debate, which involves fresh thinking and a bit of hard work and perhaps a portion of joy and satisfaction. This can be daunting; perceived technical risks, high financial stakes and a sophisticated regulatory framework are understandable reasons for resisting change. However experience shows that a measured, considered and clearly communicated design strategy can pay big dividends. Learning new things, achieving higher standards of design quality and associated commercial benefits are some of the advantages.
I am motivated to tackle challenging questions, thrifty with resources, creative in dealing with constraints and committed in delivery. And it’s Van’s reinforcing words that serve as a chiming clarion call “You gotta fight every day to keep mediocrity at bay…” Van Morrison
Best wishes
Stephen
