Born 1954, Stratford, East London;  son of Ellen Mary, dressmaker, and Leonard manager of brewery bottling hall; brother to Colin; godfather to Morwenna, Rebecca and Jessica; Carpenters Primary School then Stratford Grammar School until 17; swimming, basketball and water polo for county; no A levels; jeweller’s assistant; draughtsman; inspecting London sewers; University of London, Kings College, BSc Honours, Civil Engineering; designer sewage treatment plants for Thames Water; London office of Trinidad based consultancy on design of sewage treatment plants and steel rolling mills for Port of Spain and Libya; 1984 designer and Partner Alan Baxter & Associates, civil and structural engineers; at Paddington begin the search for greater civility in our streets; 1992 Manchester Great Northern Warehouse Initiative and Piccadilly Basin; 1996 move to North West; IRA bomb; competition winners for re-planning Manchester city centre; first major public space work with concept of Exchange Square and closing the Arndale Bus Station; 1997 founded Martin Stockley Associates; shared office with Nick Johnson and dog Barney; city centre rebuilding; competition winner Urbis; No 1 Deansgate; Urban Splash’s first new building Timber Wharf, a beautiful pre-cast concrete structure;  master plan and lead consultant for New Islington Millennium Community, Manchester, more leaps forward in public realm design;  Ancoats Public Realm, streets without traffic signage, no more one-way streets; framework engineer for University College London, School for Slavonic and East European studies, entirely passively ventilated, huge un-jointed, solid masonry wall, all brick arches structural, no fakes; 2006 a book, The Reluctant Engineer; New Road, Brighton, a street transformed, high point of public realm work to date; Middlehaven masterplan with Will Alsop now on site; re-design frontage to Liverpool Lime Street; suspend a beautiful mechanical spider from Seifert’s ailing tower; Park Hill Sheffield, Europe’s largest listed building, rework, repair, reuse; 2008 co-found An Outlet, a great little coffee house in Manchester; Alsop’s first residential building, Chips, twelve metre cantilever supporting six stories, stunning, our best yet…
