University College London (UCL) – Anthropology
This project provides new teaching and office accommodation for the Department of Anthropology and comprises a new six storey steel framed building connected to an existing five storey building which has been refurbished. The site for the new build is over an existing occupied basement involving difficult interfaces and surrounded on all four sides by existing buildings.
To minimise impact to the existing basement structure, the entire new structure is bridged from two vertically trussed frames at either end of the building over the basement, which are supported on new piled foundations. The internal space to the upper floors of the building is kept free of columns allowing a flexible layout of the rooms.
