‘Is Love Carbon Neutral?’

flyerW

Mike Berners-Lee’s thought provoking book, ‘How bad are bananas, the carbon footprint of everything’  clearly sets out for us the real carbon cost of every day items; the single red rose bought for a loved one on St Valentine’s Day (out of season) equates to 4.5 kilos of bananas.  But the objects we make in the built environment have much longer life spans than red roses and bananas.  The technology of sustainable building is only part the story; many of our most loved  buildings would score very poorly on a BREEAM rating.

So what part does our human attachment and affection for buildings play in planning and designing for sustainable developments?

Mike-Berners-Lee will talk about the principles of his book and how this might be useful for those of us designing in the built environment.  Martin Stockley will question the process by which we make decisions on retention and reuse versus demolish and build.  He will use the retention of Park Hill flats as an example before throwing the discussion open to the floor.
